Zork Trilogy Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 21, 2026
Zork Trilogy is a classic text adventure application that runs inside the Root platform. It allows members of a Root community to play the original Infocom interactive fiction trilogy (Zork I: The Great Underground Empire, Zork II: The Wizard of Frobozz, and Zork III: The Dungeon Master) in an authentic retro green-screen console.
This policy explains what information Zork Trilogy collects, how it is used, and how your data is protected.
Zork Trilogy runs within a Root community. Your account, authentication, and identity are managed by the Root platform, and Root’s own privacy policy governs the platform itself. This policy applies specifically to the Zork Trilogy app.
Information We Collect
Identity from Root. When you play Zork Trilogy, the app receives your Root user identifier and your community display name or nickname to personalize the terminal interface and associate your game saves with your profile. The app does not receive or store passwords.
Game Progress and Save States. To enable persistent gameplay across sessions, Zork Trilogy collects and stores:
- Current game selection (Zork I, Zork II, or Zork III)
- Turn-by-turn game state snapshots (dynamic memory, location, score, and moves)
- Command history and adventure session transcripts
- Named custom save checkpoints created in the save slot manager
Preferences. The app stores terminal display preferences (such as CRT scanline overlay toggle).
Leaderboard entries. Zork Trilogy keeps a leaderboard for each of the three games, shared with your Root community. For each game you play, it records your display name, your best score, the number of moves it took, the location you had reached, and when the entry was last updated. An entry is created the first time you play a game and is updated when you improve on it.
How We Use Information
We use this information solely to operate the game and preserve your adventure progress:
- Automatically save and resume your game state after every turn
- Allow you to create, list, restore, and delete custom save slots
- Display your adventurer nickname, current score, moves, and location in the terminal status bar
- Rank your best run against those of other members of your community on the leaderboard for each game
We do not use your information for advertising, tracking across third-party sites, or commercial profiling, and we never sell your data.
How Information Is Shared
Zork Trilogy is a single-player game. Your active gameplay sessions, save slots, and command transcripts are private to your Root user account — no other member can read them.
The leaderboard is the exception. It is shared with your community by design: other members can see your display name alongside your best score, the moves it took, and the location you had reached in that game. If you would rather not appear there, do not start a game — an entry is recorded as soon as you begin one.
Beyond your community, we do not share your information with any third parties, except:
- Within the Root platform environment hosting your community’s app data
- Where required by applicable law
Data Storage and Retention
All game progress and save slot records are stored securely in the Root platform SQLite environment dedicated to your community. Your game data is retained for as long as you maintain an active profile or until you delete save slots or request data removal.
To reset your game data or delete all saved progress, you can use the in-game restart/delete features or contact us at the email address below.
Leaderboard entries are handled differently: they record your best run, so restarting a game or deleting your save slots does not remove or reset your entry. To have a leaderboard entry removed, contact us at the address below.
Children’s Privacy
Zork Trilogy does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app, please contact us and we will promptly remove it.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy periodically. When changes are made, the “Last updated” date at the top of this page will be revised.
